It can be difficult to get off the couch when it’s cold, snowy, and cloudy outside. Winter has a way of making us sedentary and that can lead to increased weight gain and decreased fitness. Instead of settling for tedious treadmill runs this winter, you can have fun doing outdoor activities that can rev your body and burn plenty of calories.
With that being said, we are going to take a look at some fun ways to burn calories during winter:
Warm Up- before attempting any exercise, you should always perform a proper warmup. This is especially true during winter when your muscles are less likely to be ready for intense physical activity. Warm up for at least 10-15 minutes before doing any strenuous activity.
Morning Run- when the weather turns cold, what better way to wake up than with a morning run? Running works your glutes, quads, and legs. With each step, you need to push your body off the ground, using the muscles of your outer thighs, especially the abductors. When propelling yourself forward and pumping your arms, your upper back, biceps, triceps, and shoulders also work harder. A high intensity morning run could burn up to 350 calories in just 30 minutes.
Ice Skating- professional skaters are known for their strong glutes. Glutes propel you forward through hip extension when you push with one foot. Ice skating can also improve your abductor and adductor muscles. Although it looks quite effortless, ice skating could burn 400 calories in 30 minutes.
Winter Hiking- a winter hike is a good way to get in a good outdoor workout without having to spend a lot of money on gear. Because you are hiking on a snowy surface, winter hiking can improve your hips, especially the psoas and iliacus muscles. Regular hiking sessions in the snow can strengthen your quads, hamstrings, glutes, and hips and burn 300 calories in 30 minutes.
Yoga- after a few days doing outdoor activities, it is a good idea to have one or two days of rest. But instead of relaxing on the couch, consider doing a power yoga session. It helps to stretch your muscles and speed up the recovery process. It is possible to burn 150 calories by doing 30 minutes of power yoga session.
